The Hamas Acronym

The name Hamas is derived from the acronym HMS, which is short for Harakat al-Muqawama al-Islamiyya, literally “Islamic Resistance Movement.” “Hamas,” in addition to being the name of the group, is also an Arabic word and means “zeal” or “courage.”

Given the proper full name, Harakat al-Muqawama al-Islamiyya, shouldn’t the acronym instead be HMI?

Wikipedia has a fairly informative article on Hamas.

HMI would not be an acronym, merely a set of initial letters, and which words should be selected for initialization ? In the making of acronyms the guiding principle seems to be that the end product should be something that resembles a word, and if it coincides with another word with overlapping meaning, so much the better, e.g. SWAT.

  2. Thanks for information.
    many interesting things
